Hello Hockey-Lers,

It seems that even in college hockey starved St. Louis there is some
excitement over Mike Grier. As you may know, he is a St. Louis Blues
prospect. Last night he was interviewed (live?) on a St. Louis TV
station for their Sunday night sports rap-up show. Seems St. Louis
is salivating over his scoring ability (compared to Wayne G!) and his
hitting skills (compared to Eric Lindros). Since it took me by suprise
I don't have a transcript, but I can give a brief idea of what
was said.

Of course, Mike was asked about the prospect of being the first
African-American in the NHL. He was very gracious and said it was
an honor for him. Asked if he felt like a role model (ala. Charles
Barkley: "I'm no role model!") he said he felt he was and wanted to
be a good one, especially for other black children interested in
hockey.

He was asked about playing in St. Louis, especially for Mike Keenen.
He said he was looking forward to it. He also said he has been
following the Blues since being drafted.

Of most interest to college hockey and BU fans in particular was
questions about him staying at BU and how long. He said he is enjoying
school and the team this year. He said he thinks he needs another
year before being ready for the NHL. He will assess the situation in
April. It sounds like (IMO) that he is leaning toward staying because
he said he isn't interested in going back and forth between St. Louis
and their minor league team Peoria.
