MTU OFF TO LEAGUE-LEADING COLORADO COLLEGE THIS WEEKEND
Series To Be Played On Saturday Night and Sunday Afternoon
This Week: The Michigan Technological University hockey team will travel to
Colorado Springs, Colo., for a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey
Association series with league-leading Colorado College this weekend.
Saturday's (Feb. 25) opening game will begin at 9:05 p.m. (EST), with
Sunday (Feb. 26) rematch slated for a 4:05 p.m. opening faceoff. Both games
will be staged at the Air Force Academy Cadet Ice Arena (2,550) on the
grounds of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
On Radio: All Michigan Tech games can be heard live on WZRK radio, 93.5 FM.
Bob Olson, the dean of broadcasters in the WCHA, is in his 24th season as
the voice of the Huskies. Volunteer assistant coach Darcy Way is back for
his fifth year providing color commentary.
The Records: MTU is 15-14-4 on the season overall and 12-13-3 in the WCHA.
Colorado College, which is with one win can clinch its second straight
MacNaughton Cup, is 24-8-0 in all games and 19-7-0 in league action.
The Coaches: Bob Mancini (Colorado College, 1982) is in his third year
behind the bench at MTU. He owns a 45-56-14 record at the school and in
four-plus years as a college head coach sports an 81-87-25 mark. Don Lucia
(Notre Dame, 1981) is in his second year behind the Colorado College bench.
He owns a 45-19-5 career record at the school. In six-plus years as a
college head coach, Lucia is 148-118-15.
The Series: Michigan Tech and Colorado College meet for the 121st and 122nd
times this weekend. In the all-time series, which dates back to the 1946-47
campaign, MTU holds a 65-51-4 advantage. Earlier this season, the Tigers
took both ends of a league series in Houghton, Mich., winning 3-1 the first
night (Dec. 2) and 9-3 in game two (Dec. 3).
Coach Mancini on the Colorado College Series: "Colorado College has an
excellent blend of offense, defense, and goaltending and that's why they're
one of the top teams in college hockey. We respect their program a great
deal and look forward to competing against them this weekend."
Coach Mancini on the Northern Michigan Series: "We won the Ramada Cup for
the second straight year and that was very satisfying. Obviously we would
have liked to win both games this weekend, but that didn't work out."

About Colorado College: A pair of junior forwards -- Colin Schmidt and
Peter Geronazzo -- are the offensive leaders of the Colorado College
Tigers. Both have played in 34 games, with Schmidt totaling 18-28--46 and
Geronazzo 23-23--46. Other top Tiger point getters include senior forward
Jay McNeill (30-14--44), junior forward Chad Remackel (14-26--40), senior
forward R.J. Enga (18-20--38), and senior forward Ryan Reynard (16-21--37).
In goal, sophomores Ryan Bach and Judd Lambert have split time. Bach is
15-3-0 with a 3.01 goals against average and a .901 saves percentage.
Lambert sports a 10-6-0 record to go with a 3.19 goals against average and
an .889 saves percentage. Colorado College is operating at a .234 clip on
the power play (56-239), while opponents are scoring at a rate of .172 (35-204).

Huskies Hints: The 18 shots on goal by MTU in the first period of last
Friday's (Feb. 17) game at Northern Michigan marked the most shots on net
in the opening period by the Huskies this season. The previous high was 17
on two other occasions . . . MTU improved to 9-3-2 in true road games as a
result of last Friday's 5-3 win at Northern Michigan . . . The Huskies are
seeking to be at home for the first round of the WCHA playoffs for the
second time in three seasons under coach Bob Mancini . . . Junior center
and All-WCHA candidate Pat Mikesch (Hancock, Mich.) moved into MTU's
all-time top 10 in career assists last weekend vs. Northern Michigan. He
now has 90 assists to his credit, good for the number 10 position on MTU's
all-time chart . . . Freshman goaltender Matt Kucway (Livonia, Mich.)
started both games vs. NMU last weekend, marking his first back-to-back
starts as a Husky. Kucway has played in the last six MTU games . . .
Freshman center Andre Savage (Ottawa, Ont.), a solid candidate for the WCHA
All-Rookie Team, has a four-game point streak in progress (0-5--5). Savage
has at least one point in seven of the last nine contests (1-7--8) . . .
MTU will play its final four regular-season games on the road. MTU has not
finished the regular season at home since 1989-90 . . . Freshman left wing
Austyn Kryzer (Afton, Minn.) has a three-game point streak in progress
(2-2--4). In addition, Kryzer has at least one point in five of the last
seven games he's played in (4-2--6) . . . Michigan Tech has 15 wins to its
credit through 33 games. A year ago, the Huskies had nine wins through 33
contests and 13 total wins overall . . . Senior left wing and All-WCHA
candidate Brent Peterson (Thunder Bay, Ont.) had a pair of power play goals
last weekend against Northern Michigan, moving him into a seventh-place tie
with Gord Salt on MTU's all-time goal-scoring chart with 78 . . . Junior
defenseman Jason Wright (Thunder Bay, Ont.) gained his first goal of the
season in last Saturday's (Feb. 18) game with NMU. Wright now has 1-21--22
on the year.
MTU Hockey To Celebrate 75 Years At Reunion This Summer: One of the biggest
events in Michigan Tech's hockey history will take place in conjunction
with Alumni Homecoming Aug. 3-5 on the Michigan Tech campus as the Huskies
celebrate 75 years of hockey. Several special events are planned to
commemorate the occasion and all former players are encouraged to make

Coaches Corner/Blueline Luncheon: If the Huskies host the first round of
the WCHA playoffs, the final Coaches Corner/Blueline Club Luncheon will be
staged Friday, March 10, in the Lake Superior Room of the Best
Western-Franklin Square Inn in downtown Houghton.
Up Next: Following its series with Colorado College, the Huskies will head
to Madison, Wis., for a regular-season-ending series with the Wisconsin
Badgers on March 4-5.
