Hey Sports Fans,

Arizona 1 4 3 : 8
UM-D 1 2 2 : 5

The game was marred by many penalties causing the game to drag on for more
than 3 hours; the second and third periods seem to take forever. At one
point in the third, there were four of each team in the penalty box. Besides
the many coincidental minors, there were two-10 minute misconducts, a double
minor, and a 5-minute highsticking major. This gives you the idea of what
kind of game it was.

In the first period, it seemed that Arizona would have its hands full as the
UM-D team came out hard. But Dennis Hands played well, making some excellent
saves to limit them to one goal.

The second period, as for most of the season, belonged to the IceCats. The one
goal that stands out in my mind is by Greg Mitchell. Taking a pass at his own
blueline, he skated the rest of the way in, blowing by everyone, taking a huge
slapshot, and placed between the goalie's legs, scores easily. UM-D goals in
the second were also well-timed slapshots.

The third period saw Steve Hutchings receive a 5-minute major for highsticking.
UM-D was able to score once on that power play. Down 7-4 with three minutes
left, UM-D pulled their goalie for the extra skater and scored with :38 on the
clock. Arizona answered quickly with an empty-netter at :14 left. Andy
Ashare played relief for Dennis Hands in the third and the 6-on-5 kept him
busy.

I guess a big part of the game was the fact that Dennis Hands played for UM-D
last year before transferring to UA. Not only that, but his brother is on the
current UM-D squad. That tended to keep emotions high during the game.

The #2 IceCats play #9 UM-D again tonight at the T.C.C.
