The championship game was a good one, officiated by Brandt, Yackel, and
Swiader. DU special teams had a good night, starting off the scoring in the
first period with a power play goal. BC answered a little later right after
the end of their own power play to tie up the game. DU's Paul Koch had to
be helped off the ice for what was later determined as a fractured right
ankle and he'll be out for 10 weeks, joining fellow defenseman captain Mark
Luger, who is also out with a broken ankle. One of the few incidents
occurred midway through the first, when DU's Wallinheimo fell on the puck for
a save, several players got into shoving matches as a BC player was attempting
to get the puck, and several coincidentals resulted. Less than a minute later
a BC player took down Wallinheimo and received a 5 minute major for checking
the goaltender. A second BC penalty with only 2 minutes of the major gone
gave DU a 5 on 3 situation for a full 2 minutes, but the Pioneers weren't
able to capitalize as BC's Taylor made some great saves and they managed to
kill off both penalties. DU regained the lead in the second period with
a shorthanded goal by Naylor at the halfway mark. DU had a lot of shots on
goal this period, and there were some excellent saves by Taylor. Jason Elders
beat Taylor with 3 minutes left in the period to give DU a two goal lead, cut
short when Chase scored for BC with only 10 seconds left in the period. At
6:38 of the third, another incident occurred, sending BC's Brian Callihan to
the box with a double minor for holding and roughing and DU's Hollingshead to
the dressing room with a 5 minute major and game dq for fighting, as he
punched Callihan. He is also suspended now for the first game with Colorado
College on Jan. 7th. This left DU with only 4 defenseman for the rest of
the game. Elders regained the two goal lead with a shot from the slot with
about 6 minutes left. Immediately following that goal BC received a delay
of game penalty as Taylor had sent the puck into the crowd in disgust. Later
in the period DU had a shorthanded breakaway opportunity, but BC defense
caught up to him and he had no room to get off a good shot. BC pulled
Taylor for the last 27 seconds, but weren't able to score and the game ended
with DU winning 4-2. Both teams had good penalty killing, and both Taylor
and Wallinheimo were outstanding in the net.
It was a good game to watch and it gave me an opportunity to watch
DU play before their home and home series with Colorado College Jan. 7-8.
Speaking of CC, does anyone have the score of the CC-Miami game from the
Cleveland Classic?
