In a game just concluded at Orono, Maine, the Engineers of
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute hung on to defeat the Bowling
Green Falcons 5 to 4. RPI built a 5 - 1 advantage on their own
hustle and BGSU's lack of an offensive plan. By the time BGSU
decided to buckle down and play, it was too late.

The tone for much of the game was set with a little over three
minutes gone when Askew of RPI drew an interference penalty
(delayed call). Bowling Green got a good break up the center
and Majic got called for a trip before action was halted.
The subsequent 5 on 3 power play was spent with BGSU passing
the puck on the perimiter and eventually setting up unscreened
shots from the points. Little fielded them easily. Nobody
set screens, nobody maneuvered to be in position for rebounds.
The few BG fans near me began to grumble; their complaints
got a lot louder before the game ended.

By contrast RPI hustled all over the ice and rushed the net
when opportunity offered. Even when a man down they tried to
pressure Petrie. BG could had most of the action but didn't
press their chances. After one period BGSU had outshot RPI
17 to 11, but the scoreboard showed who had the real shots.
RPI 4 - BGSU 1.

The teams traded goals in the second period. BGSU had 10
shots; RPI 7.

Penalties dominated the first 5 minutes of the third. At
that point the action became end to end and BGSU stepped up
their level of play.  They seemed more organized and intense;
they were rushing in close on Little and trying to get him to
the wrong corner and jam it by him. RPI didn't seem to be
tiring; BGSU was just pressing whatever advantages they
could generate. A score ant 12:10 and another at 15:26
(on a power play) brought them within one. RPI drew a
penalty at 18:06, but a BGSU let-down gave RPI a rush and
Petrie had to stop two shotswith 1:11 to go. With 52 sec.
left BGSU hit a post. With 25 sec. to go intense pressure
resulted in a good shot and a glove save by Little. By now
Petrie was long gone and RPI managed to force the puck out
and threaten an empty netter to keep BG from more pressure.
In the last period 16 shots for BGSU, 10 for RPI.
