Summary:
BU completed the weekend sweep of Northeastern last night with a
hard fought, 5-3 win at Walter Brown Arena. Dave Sacco led the Terriers
with 2 goals, including 1 short-handed, to hand the Huskies their 22nd loss
overall (17th in HE) and send them packing for the dreaded playoff opening
round trip to Maine (in two weeks).
Mike Pomichter opened things up just 00:48 into the game when he
took a pass from Dave Sacco right in the slot and one-timed a shot past NU
netminder Elijah Gold to put the Terriers up 1-0.
Despite some solid pressure from BU for most of the period, Gold
made some impressive saves to hold the Terriers' lead at one. At the other
end of the ice, though, NU forwards Sebastien Laplante and J.F. Aube
made some nice plays, including several 2-on-1's, to keep Terrier netminder
Scott Cashman on his toes. The teams traded a pair of penalties mid-way
through, but when Tom Parlon took a boarding call for the Huskies to give
BU a man-advantage at 14:33, the Terriers capitalized. This time it was
Pomichter feeding Sacco, who was camped out in front, and he railed it
past Gold for a 2-0 BU lead.
The Huskies responded exactly four minutes later, at 19:50 when
Dino Grossi took a pass from Jason Kelly and wheeled right around Cashman
to put the Huskies on the board at close out the period.
The second period was a display of the same hockey we'd seen all
weekend--wide open, with both teams getting good chances. After a good
first period by NU's Gold, coach Ben Smith replaced him with frosh Mike
Veisor, who has given BU fits but took the OT loss the night before at
Matthews Arena. For one reason or another, the change rallied NU a bit,
and they took control of the game for the next 15:00 of the period.
A BU power-play to open the period went nowhere, and it was the Huskies'
turn in the driver's seat. At 8:14, Petteri Kosikimaki took a seat for a
high-stick, and the unusually fired-up NU power-play swung into action.
At 10:04 Jordan Shields notched his 13th of the season when he beat Cashman
on his left side, after Darryl MacNair's shot from the point rebounded off
Cashman's stick and landed in Shield's lap. Just 00:51 later, Dan Lupo gave
the Huskies a 3-2 lead on a 6-5 advantage for a delayed call against BU's
Kaj Linna. Jason Melong scooted the puck right across the crease to the
wide-open Lupo, who tucked it just inside the post. Jay Schiavo also notched
his 3rd assist of the night for the Huskies on the go-ahead goal.
NU continued to dominated play, and things looked rosy when Mike
Bavis went to the box for hooking and yet another man-advantage for the Huskies.
But on another delayed penalty call, this one on NU during their own power-play,
Steve Thornton hit Dave Sacco in the BU zone, who beat an NU defender and
beat Veisor's glove on a clean breakaway to tie it at 3. It was Sacco's 4th
SHG of the season.
This took the wind of out of the Huskie's sails, and they never would
recover the level of intensity they used earlier in the period to frustrate the
Terriers, despite outshooting BU in the final stanza. NU had another power-play
at 1:52 of the third but it was all the Huskies could do to keep the puck
out of their zone. Things went from bad to worse for the Huntington Hounds
when Koskimaki and Doug Friedman broke in on a 2-1 after a NU defensive lapse,
and Friedman nailed Koskimaki's rebound through Veisor's pads for the 4-3
BU lead. The Huskies did not quit entirely, but the frustration was evident
as they began to slow down and make more mistakes. BU used a lot of fo
forechecking in this game, especially in the third, to throw NU out of whack.
For the last several minutes, the Huskies had loads of trouble even clearing
the zone. At 14:44 frosh star Jay Pandolfo capped the scoring when he took
a pass from Steve Thornton at the point and battled his way right onto Veisor's
doorstep, beating him on the stick side for the 5-3 lead and BU's 3rd
unanswered goal. On the play Sebastien Laplante took a 10-min. misconduct
for the Huskies and only adding to the already-flaring tempers. NU had another
power-play late, could do nothing. Then, with just 1:30 left, Dino Grossi
made a great play and walked in all alone, but Cashman made the save to
hold the 2-goal lead. The final minute of the game was marked by a rash of
penalties, as BU's Rich Brennan and NU's Mike Taylor (2 g's night before)
each took 4-min. double minors at 19:04. But in the last 30 seconds
Bob Kellogg and Darryl MacNair each took trips to the box to give BU a 5-3
advantage for the remainder of play.
Scott Cashman finished with an impressive 36 saves as BU heads
into the last weekend of regular-season play with a Friday-night contest
at Providence. Northeastern tangles up with cross-town rival BC at Conte
Forum in also on Friday, after BC plays an unusual Tuesday-night game at
Maine this week.
