With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
almost upon us, it's time to announce the winners of the Pick the
Post-Season Tournament contests. For Contest #2, in which all rounds are
scored the same, the overall winner is...
Wayne Smith
whose total of 69 points was good enough to edge out runner-up Scott Kaplan
by one. Congratulations, Wayne!
As for the individual conference winners...
The top spot in the ECAC went to Sean Keller with 20 points.
Scott Kaplan's 18 points were good for first place in Hockey East.
The WCHA was won by Craig Roberts with 12 points.
Nathan Hampton took the NCHC with 13 points.
Atlantic Hockey saw a four-way tie among Sean Keller, William Sangrey,
Richard Vehlow, and Craig Roberts. The first tiebreaker, and the title,
went to Sean.
There was another four-way tie in the Big Ten race, this one among Wayne
Smith, Bill Krebs, Bill Groskreutz, and myself. Wayne and me remained
tied after the first tiebreaker, but the second tiebreaker went to me.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and thanks again to all those who participated.
Note that since the NCHC consolation game ended in a tie, anyone who
picked North Dakota or Denver to win the consolation was awarded 1 point.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you
picked the score of the ECAC championship game (actually 4-1) to be 2-1,
you would get two points; if you picked 2-0, you would get three points;
and if you picked 6-4, you would get five points. Obviously, the lower the
point score the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the entire tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For Atlantic Hockey, the championship game score was 7-4.
For the Big Ten, the championship game score was 5-3, and the total goals
scored in the tournament was 37.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game had been picked to win.
