CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. -- The 10th-ranked Providence College Friars were
defeated by the second-ranked Boston College Eagles, 4-0, in HOCKEY EAST
action, on Friday, January 19, 2001 at BC's Kelley Rink
        Boston College took a 1-0 lead at the 6:45 mark of the first period, on
Brian Gionta's short-handed goal.  The Eagle's Ben Eaves charged down the
left side of the ice and found a streaking Gionta in front of the Friars'
net.  Gionta one-timed the puck past PC's netminder Nolan Schaefer for the
game's first goal.
        The Friars had numerous opportunities to tie the game in the first period
but were unable to solve Eagle's netminder Scott Clemmenson.  Clemmenson
recorded 10 saves in the opening 20-minutes.
        BC's Jeff Giuliano extended the Eagles' lead at the 8:31 mark of the second
period.  Giuliano wristed a shot from the right face-off circle that just
found its way under Schaefer's pads.   With just 13 seconds remaining in the
second period Eave's tipped  Rob Scuderi's shot past Schaefer, giving the
Eagles a 3-0 lead after two periods of play.
        At 7:35 of the thirdperiod, Gionta broke in one-on-one with Schaefer and
tallied his second goal of the game, giving the Eagles a four goal lead.
        Clemmenson earned his 14th win of the season while stopping 18 shots.
Schaefer turned away 32 shots in the loss.
        With the win,  Boston College improves to 16-6-1 overall and 9-3-1 in
league play, while Providence drops to 13-6-1 and 7-4-1 in HOCKEY EAST action.
        The Friars will return to action on Saturday, January 20, versus Boston
College at Schneider Arena at 7:00 p.m.
