Conference size is just one aspect of the problem. D-1 schools
basically have to belong to a conference to get into the big
dance at the end of the year. Right now the nc$$ saves 8 of the 12
slots for conference champions. Of course, the same team could win the
season title and the conference tourney , but that does not happen too
often. Thus there are only 4 slots for the rest of the D-1 schools to
compete for. This includes the independent schools as well as the
schools from "tough" conferences. To "fix" the problem of conferences
being to big,the nc$$ is going to have to look at the automatic bid
system first.
