Students from SCSU have filed a class action suit against the university
because the school has failed to raise its club women's ice hockey program
to varsity status.

St Cloud State was offered $125,000 by the Minnesota Amateur Sports
Commission to start a program this fall, but the university turn it down.
There have also been some other grants available. The university says
money is the main issue. SCSU does plan to start a women's varsity team
in 2000-2001. The club side has played for the last 9 years. Among the
assets at SCSU are two Olympic sized ice rinks.

While I don't think anyone wants a law suit, I'll have to say I've been
expecting another Title IX action in regards women's ice hockey. There
are a number of schools with women's club ice hockey programs who seem to
be dragging their feet on this issue. Some of them have extremely rich
athletic departments. I would not be surprised to see a few other suits
soon.

I do not know much about the SCSU details, but given the information I've
just seen, they should be going varsity this fall and forming a Midwest DI
league with Minnesota, Mankato State and Bemidji State.
