The Buckeye Hockey annual awards banquet was held Saturday, May 9, at the
Fawcett Center on the campus of the Ohio State University in Columbus. The
banquet drew a record number of attendees (over 150--no official head count).

Buckeye hockey alum John Mowat (OSU '85) was the Master of Ceremonies, and
Columbus Blue Jackets GM Doug MacLean was a guest speaker.

Here is a list of the awards given. Astericked (*) awards are voted on by
the players.

Scholar-Athlete Award: Senior Defenseman Trevor Putrah

Icer of the Month Awards (given by the Buckeye Sports Bulletin):
October, freshman forward Vinnie Grant
November, junior forward Dan Cousineau
December, junior forward Chris Richards
January, sophomore forward Eric Meloche
February, senior forward Todd Compeau
March, freshman goalie Jeff Maund

The Scarlet Letter Award: Chris Richards (Neal Rech was first runner-up)
(This award, given by the minor officials to the player who contributes the
most "intangibles"--hustle and willingness to take an intelligent penalty,
among other criteria--is the brainchild of the amazing Peter Berryman)

Leading Scorer: sophomore forward Hugo Boisvert

*Defensive Player: sophomore defenseman Ryan Skaleski

*Most Improved Player: junior forward Neal Rech

Coaches Award: Chris Richards

*Most Valuable Freshman: Jeff Maund

*Most Valuable Player: Jeff Maund

In addition, Perry Pooley (OSU '84) was on hand to present Hugo Boisvert
with his award for first-team All-American. Boisvert is just the third
Buckeye to have been named All-American, and he's the first since Perry and
his brother Paul were both named All-American in 1984.

The Ohio Cup was also re-presented to the team. The Cup is given to the
Division-I hockey program in Ohio with the best head-to-head record against
other D-I Ohio teams; this is the first Ohio Cup win for the Buckeyes since
1983, the first year the Cup was awarded.

OSU Athletic Director Andy Geiger presented John Markell with the CCHA Coach
of the Year Award (again), because Markell wanted the opportunity to
publicly thank his coaching staff of Casey Jones, Bill McKenzie, and Steve
Brent.
