I agree that Bostonians think the universe revolves around them (I grew up
in New Hampshire, so I've had plenty of first hand experience).  However, I
think Boston sports fans (that includes other New Englanders that follow
Boston teams) are among the most knowledgeable and devout.  The
attendance figure has a lot to do with ticket price, as has been mentioned
previously, which is one of the highest in the league.
 
I wasn't going to say anything earlier because I think this whole "my city
is
better then your city" stuff is stupid, but since you mentioned Detroit
calling
itself "Hockeytown," I should point out that there were about 50 people
(exaggeration) in attendance at the North American University
Championship game.  :-)
