I recall something in the rule book (which of course I don't have) about "fan
interference".  This may just specifically refer to throwing objects on the
ice, but I recall a more general rule that may have been invoked to keep
various bands from playing while play was happening on the ice.  Perhaps such a
rule would apply here... I certainly hope so.

I read somewhere that rink security "handled the situation" -- whether that
involved tossing the offending fan(s) or just confiscating the pointer, I
couldn't say.

The established procedure for handling the throwing of objects onto the ice is
to have the PA announcer read a warning after the first occurrence to the
effect of "any further throwing of objects on the ice will result in a bench
minor to the home team."  And then minors are assessed if the throwing
continues.  There was no warning read after the pointer incident.
