The Hobey won't or shouldn't come from the WCHA. Jason Roy is right in
stating that Jason Blake and David Hoogsteen are having great years. Last
year's best college player, Mike Crowley from Minnesota is nowhere near his
level of play from last year. Nonetheless he is playing as well as he did
as a Freshman which is still pretty high. There was some talk of Eric
Rassmussen in the running. I don't recall any of the UM fans bringing up
the criteria for the Hobey that they did last year when Brian Bonin
won,(i.e.) gentlemanly play, fairness, leadership......I also think
Rassmussen may have cost himself a figure by deciding to return instead of
signing with Buffalo. I look for Buffalo to not offer him a contract and
have him stay another year at Minnesota.

Mike Peluso has been inconsistent, and I don't know if his defense has
improved. There are three St. Cloud players who are good, Matt Cullen,
Sacha Molin and Dave Paradise , but not Hobey candidate material.

My vote for player of the year, not necessarily Hoby:

Brian Swanson from Colorado College.

Jim Evans
Arlington H.S.
