Miscellaneous notes:

Mike Schafer becomes the second ECAC coach to win an ECAC title in his
first season as a head coach, following Dan Fridgen's debut with RPI
last year ... Cornell wins its 8th tournament in 28 appearances ...
Harvard and Cornell lead the current ECAC teams in final appearances (23
between them), but met for only the 2nd time in the championship game
(1969 was the other).

Hockey-L related anecdotes:

Mike Schafer made two veiled Hockey-L references; quoting Keith Instone
at the awards banquet on Thursday night (didn't hear it myself, so can't
tell you the nature of the comment), and saying that "I've been looking
at the RPICH on the internet" during the press conference after the
semifinal (while casting a sidelong glance at Hockey-L's Adam Wodon) ...
Hockey-L's Greg Berge was one of four contestants on the ice between
the first and second period of the championship game, attempting to
put a puck through a small opening from center ice (the prize was $20,000).
Berge fired wide right and might want to consult with Mike Sancimino
before his next attempt at shooting under pressure.

"Thank you Schafer"

Ronn Tomassoni called Cornell a clutch-and-grab team during the pregame
show on WADN (Concord, Mass). When asked about that characterization by
WADN play-by-play man Don Boyle, coach Schafer replied to the effect that
Cornell plays physical defense, thank you, and that "clutch-and-grab" is
an overused misnomer.

Geoff's bonus observations:

Cornell won the tournament with great defense; Harvard also played very
well through the neutral zone and its own end, but Cornell consistently
played the body and wore teams down more effectively. Martin St. Louis
may not have won ECAC Player of the Year (this time) or an ECAC tournament
title, but he was the best player at Lake Placid -- he was unbelievable
(6 points in two games). Best fans? I give the UVM supporters a huge
amount of credit for sticking around for the consolation game, but the
Cornell section won the volume war (of course, they had more reason to
cheer) - and the Big Red fans really had it going against Clarkson in the
creativity department ("Beat the traffic," "Consolation," etc.). Where
were the Harvard fans?
