Let's see, Dave Spehar and Chris Locker are both playing college hockey next
year, so that's my hook to mention a game that puts pretty much all the great
games we've talked about on this list to shame.

I got home from work about 11:00 this evening only to discover that one of my
roommates had SNAFUed my attempt to tape the Minnesota-Wisconsin game this
afternoon (after this season, I won't have that happen again). In a snit, I
decided to see if I could catch the end of the last high school semi-final.
Sure enough, Spehar was just scoring give Duluth-East a tie midway through
the third against Apple Valley. Locker had to score with 38 seconds left to
tie it again (great pass from Spehar, reversing their normal roles).

From there, the game went on and on. Spehar had a breakaway in the first
overtime and got stoned. the same thing happened in the third. In the
fourth overtime, Duluth-East had a shot from the point that I really thought
went in the top of the net, but neither the ref or the goal judge saw it that
way.

Finally, halfway through the fifth overtime Apple Valley put one home to deny
East a chance at back-to-back championships. So, I got to watch a full game
anyway. The kids, used to 45 minute games, were absolutely dead long before
the game was over. It was a tremendous game, better than any of the college
hockey games I've ever seen.
