MTU bounced back after yesterday's embarrassment to defeat Cornell 7-3.
Dressing most of the first year player's suspended yesterday, Coach Mancini
demonstrated to the hapless Redmen what the MTU team can look like when
it is a more or less full team. MTU dominated throughout the game. It was
unfortunate that PASS/Prime did not elect to show the consolation game on
TV as this was MTU as it can and generally does play.

Cornell's McManus got the game's first goal on an unassisted play finding
the puck lying in front of Caravaggio and slipping it in the net off of
Caravaggio's pads. MTU's Randy Stevens broke down the right wing on a 2
on 3, received a pass from Pat Mikesch and one-timed it to the net. This
was followed two minutes later by a back hand shot by Brett Meyers on a
rebound that Skaysik gave up. The first period closed with Cornell's Karam
tying the game on a rather soft, blue line shot that bounced off of
Caravaggio's glove similar to the second shot yesterday night.

Kryser got the lone goal of the second by scooping up a Meyer's blast rebound
into the net. In the third, Andre Savage scored early when Jensen and Stevens
worked the puck out to the front the net and fed Savage. Then Brent
Peterson open up for a natural hat trick. The first goal of the series was a
ppg that Pat Mikesch fed into the center of the box and Brent snapped a
quick shot on goal. In the second shot, Brent had just come off the bench,
hadn't yet been picked up by a Cornell defender, skated down to the right
side of the crease and sniped a corner shot off a Dupont pass. Brent's last
shot was a Dupont to Pat Mikesch to Brent Peterson on the boards to the net
blast which resulted in another ppg point. (Brent's younger brother, Kyle, got
a hat trick in last year's consolation game of the GLI against Notre Dame.)
Cornell got another point late in the third when Geoff Lopatka took a pass in
the slot from Samsimino.

Next, MTU faces North Dakota at home. This is not an easy series for MTU
as North Dakota always manages to give MTU a game. MTU needs to
capture its home barn and ice as it has had a difficult time winning at
home. (Of course, they have faced Denver, Wisconsin, Northern Michigan
and Colorado College in the MacInnes Student Ice Arena. With the
exception of Northern, the other opponents are at the top of the WCHA. For
a young team, MTU probably has done well to be at the point they are now.)
MTU is 9-8-2 on the season. They have 9 games at home and 9 games
away remaining. I think it is time to see MTU moving up in the WCHA.
They have the talent to stay with anyone on the ice and that talent, while
young, is rapidly developing. MTU winning depends on 100 shots per game,
30 of which reach the goalie, giving Caravaggio support in the defensive
zone, fewer penalties, breaking up the oppponent's flow at the center line
and developing a commanding transition play.
