Sorry for the delay in getting this entered, folks, but we're in the
midst of a major home remodeling project ... new roof, soffit, fascia,
windows, etc. ... yes, I know it's the first week of December, but it's
been balmy here in central Wisconsin.  (Knock on wood :-))
 
The NCHA newsletter originates in the office of the NCHA Director of
Information, Terry Owens, at UW-Stevens Point.
 
BEAVERS HOLD FIRST WITH SWEEP; POINTERS, 'JACKETS MOVE UP
 
LAST WEEK:
 
Bemidji State kept their hold on first place and their record unblemished
with a sweep but UW-Stevens Point and UW-Superior both moved into the
fray with sweeps.  Lake Forest also took three of four points with
UW-River Falls.
 
THIS WEEK:
 
The last full conference weekend of 1994 goes off with four key series.
Conference leader Bemidji State hosts resurgent Lake Forest while second
place UW-Stevens Point is at St. Scholastica.  UW-Superior heads to St.
Norbert and UW-River Falls hosts UW-Eau Claire.

Friday:  Craig McKechney had a pair of goals and BSU got two scores in
each period for the win.  McKechney gave the Beavers a 2-0 lead after one
with his scores and Troy Edwards and Aaron Gunn notched second period
scores to make it 4-0 entering the third.  The Blugolds got on the board
at 3:18 of the third on Jeff Gunderson's score but Bemidji got goals from
Jude Boulianne and Eric Fulton to increase the lead to 6-1 before Bill
Houck closed out the scoring for UWEC with 33 seconds left.  Robin Cook
stopped 27 shots on net for the win.
 
Saturday:  Eric Fulton's score at 1:36 of the extra period gave the
Beavers a sweep.  The Blugolds took a 2-1 lead after one on a pair of
powerplay goals by Matt Loen sandwiched around Jude Boulianne's score for
BSU.  Bemidji then busted out to a 4-3 lead after two with three second
period goals by Fulton, Craig Matatall and Omer Belisle before UWEC
stopped the string with Jason Ledford's score late in the period.  In a
back and forth third period, Ledford tied it at 1:30 but Bernie Adlys put
BSU back on top at 2:13 before Loen scored his third goal of the game at
15:51 to force the overtime.  Robin Cook got the win with 19 saves while
Brian Kreft made 24 stops in a losing cause.

Friday:  Gord Abric's powerplay goal at 15:13 of the third gave UWSP the
win.  Kevin Plager had tied it early in the period after the Green
Knights had grabbed a 3-2 lead after two with goals from Silverio Mirao
and Cory Borys just 16 seconds apart.  Chad Zowin and Willy Frericks also
had scores for the Pointers while Brent Cyr had SNC's other tally.  David
Fletcher stopped 15 shots for the win while Roby Gropp had 20 saves in a
losing effort.
 
Saturday:  Willy Frericks scored a pair of goals to lead UWSP to the
sweep.  Frericks put Point on top midway through the first before SNC
tied it on Ken Holtschlag's score with under two minutes left.  But, Mike
Zambon scored at 19:11 to give the Pointers a 2-1 lead after one.  Tyler
Johnston increased it to 3-1 midway through the second but the Green
Knights rebounded on Silverio Mirao's score at 17:28 to make it 3-2
entering the third.  Frericks then scored what proved to be the deciding
goal at 7:07 of the third before Mike Porcaro closed out the scoring for
SNC.  Dave Ketola made 29 saves for the win.

Friday:  The Foresters got second period goals from Mark Studebaker and
Craig Cotterell to record their first NCHA win of the season.  LFC
grabbed an early lead on Chris Austin's irst period score before the
Falcons tied it at 1-1 after one on Jeremy Jeannette's score midway
through the first.  Mark MacGillivray stopped 25 shots on net for the win.
 
Saturday:  Chris Austin and Kit Read scored third period goals for LFC to
tie it and the teams skated through overtime for the draw.  Brian Savage
gave UWRF the lead just 17 seconds into the contest before Ryan Chase
tied it for the Foresters late in the first.  The Falcons then jumped to
a 3-1 lead after two on powerplay goals from Brian Wilson and Aaron Arf
before Austin scored at 5:49 of the third and Read at 9:29.  Sean Keck
had 23 saves for LFC while Charlie Murphy made 27 for UWRF.

Friday:  Fred Harbinson scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner
at 12:02 of the third, for the win.  Harbinson and Dustin Fahl staked the
Yellowjackets to a 2-0 lead early in the second before CSS got a
powerplay goal from Kyle Erickson and a shorthander from Fred Paine to
tie it at 2-2 after two and set the stage for Harbinson's game-winner.
Dave Graichen stopped 24 shots for the win while Andy Karsnia had 30
saves in a losing effort.
 
Saturday:  Brent Shaback, Fred Harbinson and Rodney Graham each had a
pair of goals and the 'Jackets took charge early with five in the first
period for the sweep.  Cory Fairchild, Mark Beaton, Shaback twice, and
Harbinson gave UWS a 5-1 lead after one.  Graham made it 6-1 after two
and then Graham, Chuck Komisar and Harbinson closed out the Superior
scoring with third period tallies.  Pat Hughes and Joe Nosan, with a
powerplay and shorthander in the third, scored for the Saints.  Dave
Graichen recorded the win with 28 saves.

NCHA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
 
Fred Harbinson, Sr, W, UW-Superior (Calgary, Alberta)
 
Fred Harbinson of UW-Superior is this week's NCHA Player of the Week.  In
a two-game sweep of St. Scholastica, Harbinson had four goals and one
assist, including the game-winner in Friday's win.
 
Also under close consideration were Eric Fulton of Bemidji State, who had
three goals and two assists, including the overtime game-winner on
Saturday, in a sweep of UW-Eau Claire; Joe Nosan of St. Scholastica, who
had two goals and one assist in the series with UW-Superior; Roby Gropp
of St. Norbert, who filled in for injured Scott Vettraino in a pair of
close losses with UW-Stevens Point; Matt Loen of UW-Eau Claire, who had
three goals and three assists in the series with Bemidji; Mark
MacGillivray of Lake Forest, who recorded LFC's first NCHA win of the
season with a 25-save performance against UW-River Falls on Friday; and
Willy Frericks of UW-Stevens Point, who had three goals and an assist in
a sweep of St. Norbert.
