Again, sorry for the delay in getting this out.
 
As always, the NCHA Newsletter originates in the office of the NCHA
Sports Information Officer, Terry Owens, at UW-Stevens Point.  Typos (and
they may be numerous this time) are all mine.
 
Please let me know (via private email) if you have problems with the
formatting this week.  I've tried an experiment that should help me, but
may screw things up for you.

NON-CONFERENCE PLAY HIGHLIGHTS SECOND WEEKEND
 
LAST WEEK:  Six of the eight NCHA teams played non-conference
schedules, with UW-River Falls and UW-Stevens Point taking a
weekend off.
 
THIS WEEK:  For the first time in 94-95, all eight teams are
involved in NCHA play, with Lake Forest at St. Norbert in the
Green Knights first-ever NCHA game and UW-River Falls at UW-
Stevens Point on Friday and Saturday.  In Saturday/Sunday series,
Bemidji State is at UW-Superior in a rematch of last season s NCHA
Playoff Championship series and St. Scholastica is at UW-Eau Claire.
 
St. Norbert 7, Bethel 1
St. Norbert 8, Bethel 2
 
FRIDAY:  SNC scored the first six goals of the game, including a hat
trick from Colin Ward, to win their home opener.  Ward, Kendal Kelly
and Jason Sanford made it 3-0 after one and Todd Deacetis and Ward
upped it to 5-0 after two.  Ward completed his hat trick early in the
third and, after a Bethel score, Cory Borys closed out the scoring.
Scott Vettraino and Mike Rymer combined for 18 saves in net.
 
SATURDAY:  The Green Knights got four in the first and three in the
second to coast to the sweep.  After Bethel had tied it at 1-all
midway through the first, SNC scored six straight goals to put the
game away.  Kendal Kelly had a pair of scores to lead the way.  Roby
Gropp and Mike Rymer made 31 saves in net for the win.
 
 
UW-Superior 9, Mankato State 5
UW-Superior 3, Mankato State 1
 
FRIDAY:  After spotting the Mavericks a 2-1 first period, the
Yellowjackets exploded for six second period scores on the way to
their third straight win.  Kevin Sobb, Lindsey Braun, John Murgatroyd,
Cory Fairchild, Rodney Graham, and Brent Shaback accounted for the
second period onslaught that gave UWS a 7-3 lead entering the final
period.  Braun and Shaback each had a pair of goals.  Dave Graichen
got the win in net with 23 saves.
 
SATURDAY:  UWS got a pair of third period goals to record the sweep.
Dustin Fahl staked the  Jackets to a 1-0 lead midway through the first
before MSU tied it with 17 seconds left in the second.  Tyler Walsh
and Chuck Komisar then tallied in the third for the win.  Dave
Graichen made 17 saves for the win.
 
Concordia-Moorhead 5, Bemidji State 3

FRIDAY:  The Cobbers broke up a tight game with a pair of third period
scores to defeat the Beavers.  After BSU had tied the contest at one
on Craig Matatall s powerplay score midway through the first,
Concordia got a pair of goals within two minutes of the period to take
a 3-1 lead after one.  Bemidji tied it again at three-all with second
period scores from Omer Belisle and Matatall.  But Concordia s
powerplay goal early in the third and an insurance empty-netter with
six seconds left secured the win.
 
SATURDAY:  The Beavers got two goals in each of the last two periods
to gain a split.  Omer Belisle and Richard Gibbs tallied in the second
period for a 2-0 lead and then, following an early Concordia score,
Jim Logan and Craig Matatall got third period goals for the win.
Robin Cook stopped 17 shots in net for the win.
 
St. Scholastica 5, Hamline 4 (OT)

FRIDAY:  Kyle Erickson s score just over two minutes into the extra
period gave the Saints their first win of the season.  Ryan Salem had
tied it with a powerplay goal at 6:47 of the third.  Training 1-0
after one, CSS got three straight goals from Jeff Burton twice and
Sean Storie in the first six minutes of the second period to grab a 3-
1 lead.  Hamline then tied it with two in the second and took the lead
with an early third period goal to set the state for Salem s game-
tying score and Erickson s overtime heroics.  Andy Karsnia had 17
saves for the win.
 
SATURDAY:  Hamline got five first period scores and then held on to
gain a split.  CSS got goals from Joe Nosan on the powerplay and Jeff
Burton to cut into a 4-0 first period deficit before HU made it 5-2
after one.  Hamline added another goal in the second to make it 6-1
before Kenny Beck, Adam Duke, and Fred Paine scored consecutive third
period goals in the first eight minutes to cut the lead to 6-5.  But
the Fighting Pipers got an empty-netter with eight seconds left to
seal the win and a split.
 
St. Mary's 5, Lake Forest 3

FRIDAY:  The visiting Cardinals got four goals in the third period for
the win.  SMC scored first before Lake Forest got back-to-back goals
from Joe Donlan and Todd McCaslin for a 2-1 lead early in the second
period.  But St Mary's third period explosion was too much.  Mark
Studebaker closed out the scoring with a powerplay goal midway through
the third.
 
SATURDAY:  The Foresters got two in the first and three in the third
to post their first win of the season.  Jim Drury and Craig Cotterell
gave LFC a 2-0 first period lead that held until midway through the
second period, when SMC got their lone score.  Chris Austin, Sam
McKenney and Ryan Taylor then put it away with third period scores.
Mark McGillivray and Sean Keck combined for 27 saves for the win.
 
St. Thomas 5, UW-Eau Claire 2
The visiting Tommies got four second period scores to break open a
tight game.  UWEC had taken a 1-0 lead after one on Dan Sedlacek's
shorthand goal before UST scored four unanswered to take control.
Luke Strand scored on the shorthand late in the second to make it 4-2
entering the third before St. Thomas closed it out with an early third
period score.
 
UW-Eau Claire 7, St. Olaf 5
Luke Strand recorded a hat trick and added two assists to lead the
Blugolds to their first win of the season.  After St. Olaf took a 1-0
first period lead, Jeff Gunderson and Strand scored back-to-back in
less than two minutes to take a 2-1 lead.  But the Oles scored late in
the period to tie it at 2-all after one.  Strand tallied his second
goal early in the second period followed by UWEC scores from Doug
Clark and Dan Granato to give Eau Claire a 5-4 lead after two.  Matt
Loen made it 6-4 early in the third and then Strand completed his hat
trick with an empty-netter at 19:42 to secure the win.  Bob Thorp made
33 stops in net for the win.
 
NCHA PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
 
Luke Strand, So, Forward, Eau Claire, WI, UW-Eau Claire
 
Luke Strand of UW-Eau Claire is this week's NCHA Player of the Week.
He scored five points in Saturday's 7-5 win over St. Olaf, the
Blugolds' first win of the season, including a hat trick.  He also
added a shorthand goal in Friday's 5-2 loss to St. Thomas to give him
six points on the weekend.
 
Also nominated were Craig Matatall of Bemidji State, who had three
goals and two assists in three games lats week; Lindsay Braun of UW-
Superior, who had four points on two goals and two assists in a sweep
of Mankato State; and Darren Holmes of St. Norbert, who led the Green
Knights' defensive unit while also scoring a goal in the sweep of
Bethel.
