I'm *really* annoyed because my computer crashed and I lost my
game review. I was not going to even try to re-write it, but I
have decided write something. BU and NU meet again Saturday
night at Walter Brown Arena in front of a sellout crowd of
3806. BU again played excellent hockey and this time the came
away with a 4-2 victory over NU goalie Todd Reynolds.

BU began the first period the same way they had played on
Friday night, and it paid off as Tom Parlon was called for
hooking just 1:50 into the game. BU immediately made
Northeastern pay, as Mike Grier, in his usual powerplay
position at the top of the crease, redirected a shot from the
point past Reynolds just 6 seconds later. After a WWF takedown
of Dan Lupo by Shane Johnson the two teams returned to hockey
and BU began to take control. The Terriers went up 2-0 at 9:04
when Shawn Bates won a face-off to the left of Reynolds, but
instead of drawing it back to a defenseman, he put a shot on
goal that went into the net as Reynolds was caught by surprise.
For the next seven minutes the Terriers put on a clinic, as
the controlled the puck in the NU zone and poured shot after
shot on net. Even when the Huskies got the puck out of their
zone BU got it in center ice and went right back into the NU
zone.

After weathering the storm in the first, the Huskies came out
in the second like a different team. They played much better
and even were able to control the puck in the BU zone. It paid
off for NU when Justin Kearns flipped the puck over Derek
Herlofsky from the left side of the net. The puck landed in
the crease to the right and as a BU and NU player tangled in
the crease Tomas Persson saw the loose puck, skated in a
knocked it into the open net. The Terriers slowly regained
control of the game and caused Kearns to take a penalty at
13:46 for interference. BU was unable to setup and control the
puck in the NU zone, but as the penalty time was ticking down
Chris O'Sullivan made a rush up the right side. He got past
one NU player, made a great move to around a second NU player.
From the goal line he passed the puck through the legs of a
third NU player back into the slot to Mike Grier, who gently
shot it into a completely open net. The Huskies refused to
roll over and play dead though and at 18:26 they went on the
powerplay as Chris Drury was called for interference.
Northeastern was no time as Dan McGillis scored just 9 seconds
later to make it a one goal game after two periods.

Both teams came out to play in the third, but BU was usually
quicker to the puck and kept the Huskies from mounting any
steady offensive pressure in the BU zone. Northeastern's
momentum was killed by three penalties at 8:52, 11:49, and
16:35, as well as another BU goal at 16:02. The Terriers got a
nice 3-on-2 rush as Chris Drury, Shawn Bates and Bill Pierce
made a rush into the NU zone. Bates carried the puck through
center ice into the NU zone and made a drop pass to Drury on
the right wing. Drury then made a pass to Pierce on the wing,
who made a shot from the face-off dot to Reynolds's right.
Reynolds got the toe of his skate on the puck, but the rebound
went straight out into the slot where Drury, following through
on the play, was uncovered. He collected the puck on his stick
and shot it into another open net for his first collegiate
goal.

The referees called 17 penalties, 7 on BU and 10 on
Northeastern. Jim Fitzgerald called 10 penalties, 4 on BU and
7 on NU, including a 10 minute misconduct on the Huskies'
Jordon Shields. Bob Fowkes called 6 penalties, 3 on each team.
There were two sets of coincidentials, both called in the
first period by Jim Fitzgerald.

Observations: BU played extremely well again, making it two
back-to-back games they played well. Derek Herlofsky looked to
be back in form after the two games against Lowell. He made 39
on 43 shots for a .907 save percentage and had a 2.01 GAA in
the two games. On defense Rich Brennan and Kaj Linna both
played well and took no penalties. The BU defense only took 4
penalties total, 2 each night. They also did not allow
Northeastern to get rebound shots as they usually cleared the
puck out of the zone after only one NU shot. On offense BU
looked very good, but they still misfired on far too many
scoring chances.

On special teams BU has finally started to play well, as the
short-handed unit killed 9 of 11 NU chances for an .818 kill
percentage (compared to 13 of 21 for .619 for the first 4
games). They also did a good job of not allowing NU to setup
on several powerplays, and not allowing good shots when the
Huskies did setup. It was very encouraging considering the way
they played against Lowell and Maine, but they still need to
improve. On powerplays BU continues to click, getting 2 goals
on 7 chances Saturday, a 286 success rate. Friday's 0 for 7
made the weekend total of 2 for 14, a .143 rate look poor, but
the powerplay unit did a better job of setting up in the
offensive zone, controlling the puck and getting high quality
shots on goal.

Northeastern played very poorly for one period out of six. The
other five periods they played much better, both on defense and
offense. Goaltending is the biggest strength of NU, as both
Veisor and Reynolds were in top form, each making a least a
dozen excellent saves to keep the games from becoming blowouts
for BU. The NU defense was overpowered by the BU offense, but
they still played two good games and, other than the first
period on Saturday, did a fine job of getting rebounds away
from BU and out of the NU zone. Northeastern looked the
weakest on offense, as they were unable to put much prolonged
pressure on BU in the BU zone. They do have several good
scorers and they took advantage on several opportunities they
got.

Northeastern's second biggest strength was their short-handed
unit, as they shut down BU's powerplay on Friday night and did
a decent job on Saturday. NU's powerplay was uneven, either
looking good or looking poor. NU needs to be more consistent
on powerplay if they want to do well all year. Overall I would
give NU passing grades in all areas with goaltending getting
top marks. If the defense and offense can take some of the
pressure off the goalies I see Northeastern in the thick of it
in March.
