From today's (6/26/94) St. Paul Pioneer Press in Charley Walters' column:

Woog might invite Brooks to assist him

Don't be surprised if Herb Brooks receives an invitation from Doug Woog to
become an assistant hockey coach at the University of Minnesota.

A position became vacant Friday when Mark Mazzoleni left the Gophers for the
head job at Miam of Ohio. Under Brooks, the Gophers won three NCAA
championships (1974, 1976, 1979). He coached the 1980 U.S. Olympic team to a
gold medal, then headed to the NHL, coaching the Rangers, North Stars, and
Devils. After leaving the Rangers, Brooks surprised hockey fans by returning to
college for a season (1986-87), coaching St. Cloud State to a 25-10-1 record.
The assistant job will pay approximately $55,000. For Brooks, 56, it could go
higher.

If Brooks isn't interested, look for former Gopher Mike Guentzel, who is
coaching at Omaha in the U.S. Hockey League, to get serious consideration. In
addition to Mazzoleni, the Gophers are losing administrative assistant John
Hamre to Princeton.

{end quoted stuff;  begin Pam's comments}

I have to have my doubts. Walters' column is, after all, St. Paul's answer to
Scud's sports gossip column in the Star-Tribune. Herbie as an assistant? I
have to wonder if anybody would want someone with Herbie's ego as an assistant.
Guentzel was the person I thought of.

Brooks' year at St. Cloud was when they were still Div II, but he was the one
who got the team upgraded to Div I.

Hamre was also the video coordinator for the 1994 Olympic team.
