Thanks to Mike for his elegant summary of the
ECAC in my college hockey formative years (the
early 80's).
 
One question: in each case in which a division
winner was bumped up to a home ice berth, it
was an Ivy team which benefited.  I once heard
that this was a privilege specific to the Ivies, and a
condition for their joining the conference in the
first place.  I have no idea whether this be fact or
urban (suburban?) legend.
