While I've already put in my $0.50 on Bill Cleary, here's a clarification:
 
I agree with Kevin that Cleary cultivated and practiced a realistic, civilized,
and high quality system (if you will) of hockey, one of the best possible at
the amateur level.
 
I think the point of the earlier debates is still the question of NC$$-Olympic-
NHL choices/tensions/options/policies, etc. It seems to me, still, the point is
not to fault Cleary for anything. It strikes me that he did not *actively*
encourage players to leave early in their college years and play in the NHL--
I don't know anyone who does (did), but it seems to me that Cleary was
certainly one of them. He may not of discouraged them either, I don't know. He
seemed to have fostered an ethic that encouraged what was best for the players,
and IMHO, this didn't seem to not include the Olympics, nor returning to play
NC$$ afterwards.
