I seriously doubt that Cornell athletes have preference when the Cornell
Tradition decides upon grants. As Jeff says, the Tradition Fellowships are
given only on a need basis (and willingness to perform the required GPA,
service, etc). The Tradition program operates even "farther" from the
Athletic Department than the regular Financial Aid office - if there were
any bias toward athletes (which I doubt), I would much more strongly suspect
the Financial Aid office than the Tradition.

Additionally, I would be more suspicious if there were NO athlete receiving
Tradition Grants - that could mean that athletes were receiving more aid
from the Financial Aid office....

Cornell has a program called Cornell Tradition Fellowships, which are
offered only on a need basis, and are for the sole intention of replacing
loans with grants. Some of our varsity athletes are beneficiaries of this
program.

But it's probably worth pointing out that, unlike the "regular" scholarship
grants, Tradition grants come with minimum requirements for GPA, part-time
employment, and community service that must be met each semester to
qualify, so (IMO, anyway) I don't think it qualifies as "preferential" to
athletes.
