At least, unlike your NFL examples, UM, Ohio St, MSU are west *relative* to
ECAC and Hockey East schools.  Something like NHL logic, in which Toronto
was in the west until this year and Detroit still is.
 
Isn't the last line to "Hail to the Victors" "champions of the west"?
