I'm beginning to believe that the article doesn't exist, also.
I spent a good while searching the old fashioned way yesterday; I opened up
the Readers' Guide to Periodicals and searched under every topic that I
thought might cover it. I also found the "Whistling a New Tune" article,
and while it was certainly entertaining, it was about one former NHL goon
who'd become a respected NHL ref, and didn't mention college hockey at all.
Aside from that, the only mention college hockey seems to get in SI is the
annual second week of April two-pager about the NCAA finals. And I read
every single one of those for the last several years yesterday, with barely
any mention of officiating at all, much less a mention of Cornell or Pierre.
I'll have to ask the next person who "tells" me about the article where they
heard about it. Until then, the search, she is over.
