regarding trips to the White House...
 
When Maine won it all in '93, the whole team flew down to the White House
to meet President Clinton for a congratulatory press conference.  I
don't have any evidence to the contrary, but I'm sure the players did
not pay for such a trip.  All I remember is that Coach Walsh threatened
to take the trip away from any player that skipped class.
 
I also agree that BU's situation is silly.  If a trip to meet the
nation's leader is a freebie, so should a quick trip down the road
to a major league baseball game.  Lighten up, NCAA.
