The College Hockey Discussion List Poll for February 2, 1994:

Teams were given 15 points for a first-place vote, 14 for a second-place
vote, and so on down to 1 point for a fifteenth-place vote. Total first-
place votes are in parentheses.

The Groundhog's Day edition of the HOCKEY-L poll finds a bit of a shakeup
near the top, as Northern Michigan and Lake Superior, who were #3 and #4
last week, slipped down to fifth and seventh, respectively. This allowed
Harvard to percolate to the #3 spot despite not having played a game in
almost a month. Minnesota continues its surge, as their sweep of Northern
Michigan jumped them another four spots into #8.

And it looks like it pays to advertise -- Mass Lowell cracks the top ten
this week, settling in at #9. The Chiefs were in the top ten a couple of
times earlier this season, but not since the infamous RPI tournament.

Thanks to Erik's correction in RPICH, Michigan is no longer the unanimous #1
in the ratings. Oh well, that was getting boring anyway...

And just to add fuel to the ongoing debate about what teams are or are not
deserving of respect, I did a quick comparison between the Tadpoll composite
of media polls and the Tad-rate composite of rating systems. Teams that
were ranked at least three places higher in Tadpoll than in Tad-rate were
put in the "overrated" category, while teams that were at least three places
lower were considered "underrated". The clear winner by far in the over-
rated category was Harvard, which is ranked third in Tadpoll and 13th in
Tad-rate. Conversely, New Hampshire can claim to be the most underrated
team, finishing 12th in Tadpoll and fourth in Tad-rate. Oddly enough, the
Wildcats get relatively high marks from the rating systems despite going
slightly above 0.500 in their last 18 games after starting the season 7-0.
Anyway, here's the breakdown, with "+X" indicating that the team was X
places higher in Tadpoll, and "-X" indicating they were X points lower:

     Overrated Underrated

     Harvard +10 New Hampshire -8
     Brown +6 * Northern Michigan -4
     Colorado College +3 Wisconsin -4
     RPI +3 Northeastern -3

   * Brown was not listed in Tad-rate but would finish 21st if the ratings
were extended past the top 15
