UMASS DARTMOUTH DOWNS STONEHILL, 5-2
NEW BEDFORD, MA–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team started a bit slowly but finished up with a strong effort Wednesday evening.
The Corsairs, who surrendered a goal on the game’s first shot, scored twice in the final six minutes and held off Stonehill, 5-2, in an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Northeast game at the Stephen Hetland Memorial Ice Arena.
The Skyhawks’ Paul Reissfelder beat UMass Dartmouth sophomore goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Medway HS) with the first shot of the game, giving Stonehill a 1-0 lead at the 1:54 mark. The Corsairs tied it nearly 10 minutes later, when senior forward Jim Foley (Brockton, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) scored his first of two goals on the rebound of a shot by junior forward Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA/Boston Jr. Blackhawks) to even the score at 10:44 of the first period.
Sophomore defenseman Eric Quinlan (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) slid a shot past Stonehill goalie Matt Gorman to give the Corsairs the lead at 2:53 of the second period, and Foley’s second goal of the game, assisted again by McCullough, made it 3-2 at 11:32. But the Skyhawks got a power play goal from Frank Amato at 13:32 to halve UMD’s lead after two periods.
Junior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) slammed home a shorthanded goal on the rebound of a McCullough shot at 14:03 of the third period to give UMass Dartmouth a 4-2 advantage. Grant then scored again, converting a pass from senior forward Ray Kirby (Fairhaven, MA/York Stars/Salem State) in front of the net to make it 5-2 with 2:43 to play.
“Once again, Jeff Grant made a big play,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “I thought his shorthanded goal in the third period was the key goal of the game. We really had to battle hard, but we finished well, we won the third period, 2-0, and I’m pleased with the victory.”
UMD out shot the Skyhawks, 37-26. Green made 24 saves, while Gorman was credited with 32.
The Corsairs improved their record to 3-0-0 and 1-0-0 in conference play with the victory, while Stonehill fell to 1-3-0 and 0-2-0. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Plymouth State Saturday evening, while Stonehill will visit Nichols Saturday afternoon.
