PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The 11th-ranked Providence College men’s hockey team
defeated UMass Lowell, 6-5, in overtime on Friday, October 25 at Schneider
Arena. Friar graduate student Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) scored his
third goal of the night with 48 seconds remaining in overtime to give
Providence its fifth win of the season. It marks the first time the Friars
have started the season with a 5-0 mark since 1976-77.
The Friars did not take long to get on the scoreboard as their top line
scored just 1:20 into the game. Senior Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor,
Conn.) sent a pass to senior Devin Rask (Parkside, Saskatchewan) who
threaded a pass across the crease to Fregoe. Fregoe one timed the pass
into the net for his sixth goal of the season. The Friars increased their
lead on another impressive scoring play when junior Peter Zingoni (Newtown,
Conn.) went the length of the ice around the River Hawk goal and buried the
puck behind UMass Lowell goaltender Chris Davidson at 11:01. The River
Hawks cut into PC’s lead at 18:34 with a power-play goal. Peter Hay
pounced on a rebound from Baptiste Amar’s shot and wristed it into the net.
Providence took a 3-1 lead at 11:43 of the second period on Fregoe’s
second goal of the contest. It appeared that Providence was in control of
the game until UMass Lowell went on a five-on-three power-play. The River
Hawks scored two power-play goals and ended the second period with the game
tied at 3-3. UML scored its second goal of the night at 15:44 as Geoff
Schomogi poked in a rebound with the River Hawks skating with a two-man
advantage. UML wasted little time gaining the equalizer as Danny O’Brien
scored his third goal of the season on a power play at 16:30 of the second
period.
The River Hawks took their first lead of the night at 4:11 of the third
period when Stephen Slonina scored on a wrist shot to the glove side. The
Friars tied the game on a power-play goal by Rask at 6:57 and regained the
lead at 13:06 as DiSalvatore scored off a rebound to give the Friars a 5-4
lead. However, UMass Lowell forced overtime when Ed McGrane registered his
third point of the night when he scored with 2:17 remaining in regulation.
UMass carried the play for the first two minutes of overtime before the
Friars pressured Davidson. Fregoe provided the heroics for the Friars when
he took a pass at the blueline and blasted a slap shot that slipped through
the five hole as he earned his second hat trick in the first five games.
Friar netminder Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) finished the
game with 39 saves. Davidson made 23 stops for UMass Lowell.
The Friars return to action on Friday, November 1 versus Massachusetts in
Amherst, Mass. at 7:00 p.m.
