Summary:

Union won its home opener, 4-3 over Army Friday night, before a
sellout crowd at Achilles Rink. Early on, it looked like an easy win
for the Dutchmen, but it took a 3rd period goal to break a 3-3 tie.

The Dutchmen came out flying early with scoring chance after scoring
chance, only to be denied by Army goaltender Brian Bolio. Union
finally got on the board at 12:57 on a shot from Cory Holbrough, and
quickly extended the lead to 2-0 when Troy Stevens skated down through
the faceoff circle to the right of Bolio and fed Chris Ford who was in
the slot. Army came back with a power play goal, but the Dutchmen
came right back with a power play goal of their own, when Andrew Will
walked in from the blue line and fired a shot past Bolio. The
Dutchmen badly outplayed the Cadets in the period, outshooting them
19-8, but came away with only a 3-1 lead.

The second period was just about all Army, as they came out hitting
hard and the Dutchmen took plenty of penalties. With Holbrough in the
box serving a double minor, Army scored their second goal, and the
only one of the period.

Army continued to dominate early in the 3rd, and tied it with Reid
Simonton in the box for a cross check. But Union came right back to
retake the lead on Ford's second goal of the game, this time on a pass
from freshman Charlie Moxham. Army didn't threaten much more the rest
of the way.

Union looked great early on. It really seemed to be destined to be a
blowout, but thanks to some impressive goaltending from Bolio, Army
stayed close and was able to tie the game. At the other end, Union
goalie Luigi Villa had his share of problems. He mishandled a few
pucks behind the net, and had a tendency to leave his net and dive for
pucks which were way too far for him to be playing. He got away with
it, but it took some luck. Not to say he had a terrible game though,
since he made his share of big saves as well. The biggest problem for
the Dutchmen had to be the number of penalties. They let the Cadets'
physical play get to them, and took some dumb penalties. All 3 Army
goals game on the power play.

Union improves to 1-1 on the season, while Army stands at 4-3.

There were some changes at Achilles Rink for this season. First of
all, this was a sellout crowd for a non-league game. It looks like
last season's late winning streak really has people here excited. It
was also the debut of the rink's new sound system and of the "Spirit
Horn". The sound system had been a problem as long as I've been going
to Union games. The new system is a huge improvement. The "Class of
'69 Spirit Horn" was dedicated before the game, but I have to say that
it really isn't all that loud. It sounds like a regular car horn, and
you can barely hear it when you've got all those people in there. The
new sound system was also used to play music during all stoppages,
much like the you see at a minor league pro hockey game or an arena
football game. I suppose it's OK - better than nothing, but it's
really no substitute for a band. Still no sign of a band...
