   ORONO, Maine (AP) -- Hockey East directors voted Friday
to bar the defending national champion Maine Black Bears
from the postseason tournament because of NCAA eligibility
violations.
   Representatives of the eight schools approved the ban
during a conference call Friday afternoon, Commissioner
Robert M. DeGregorio Jr. said in a statement.
   The University of Maine was considering possible legal
action, said John Diamond, the school's acting director
of public affairs.
   President Frederick Hutchinson planned to meet with
legal counsel over the weekend to consider options,
including seeking a restraining order against Hockey East,
Diamond said.
   The Hockey East decision was the latest blow to the
Maine program that has been plagued by NCAA violations
this year. The violations revolve around athletes not
taking enough credit hours to be eligible to compete.
   The disclosure of senior Patrice Tardif's ineligibility
forced the Black Bears to forfeit all the games in which
he played, giving the team a record of 5-26-2 overall
and 2-19-1 in Hockey East.
   Hockey East accepted the forfeitures and Tardif's
reinstatement for the Bears' final contests against N
ew Hampshire on Friday and Boston College on
Saturday.
