FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 6, 2007

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore forward Derek Rupert (Louisville, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals and added an assist, while freshman defenseman Martin Winzer (Nuremberg, GERMANY) chipped in with a pair of goals as the Wentworth hockey team (12-7-3, 9-1-2 ECAC Northeast) upset eighth-ranked UMass Dartmouth (19-2-1, 11-1-0), 5-2, in an ECAC Northeast contest played at Matthews Arena.

The Leopards, winners of a season-high five games in a row, jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first 15:00 of the game. Winzer broke the ice just 2:06 into the contest with a goal from junior forward Jeff Oddleifson (North Vancouver, B.C.) and sophomore forward Matt Gilman (Groveland, Mass.). Rupert netted his first of the game, from Oddleifson and Gilman, with five minutes remaining in the opening stanza.

The Corsairs trimmed the lead to 2-1 at 8:12 of the middle period on an unassisted tally by sophomore forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, R.I.) before Oddleifson netted the eventual game winner, on the power play, from Rupert and freshman forward Michael O’Brien (Royersford, Pa.) at 17:46, giving the Leopards a 3-1 lead after two periods of play.

With the Corsairs having pulled the goalie for an extra attacker, Winzer fired a shot nearly the length of the ice to give Wentworth a 4-1 lead at 18:54. At the 19:32 mark UMass Dartmouth cut the lead in half when Paquin netted his second of the game. However, with 14 seconds left, Rupert iced the game with an empty-net goal.

Freshman goalie Justin Marriott (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) made 35 saves to win his 10th game of the season (10-5-2). Sophomore Jeff Green (Medway, Mass.) suffered the loss for the Corsairs, which saw its nine-game win streak snapped and suffered its first conference loss in 28 games (regular season and playoffs), making 28 saves in 58:30 of work.

The win snapped a 12-game losing streak against ranked teams. Wentworth’s last win over a ranked team came on March 7, 2004, when the Leopards upset 10th-ranked Curry to win the 2004 ECAC Northeast Championship. Wentworth is back in action Saturday afternoon at Southern New Hampshire, while UMass Dartmouth is at Framingham State Saturday night.
