UMASS DARTMOUTH BLANKS FRANKLIN PIERCE, 7-0

NEW BEDFORD, MA–The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team scored three first-period goals and went on to a 7-0 victory over visiting Franklin Pierce in an Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast hockey game at the Stephen Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Saturday.

The Corsairs limited FPC to just 11 shots on goal, only five during the final 40 minutes. UMass Dartmouth sophomore goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) stopped all 11 shots for his third shutout of the season and the sixth of his career.

Junior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) put UMass Dartmouth on the board early, converting a pass from senior forward Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA/Boston Jr. Blackhawks) at the 3:17 mark. Junior forward Tyler Vrolyk (Boylston, MA/New England Junior Falcons) converted a drop pass from senior forward Peter Lindner (Parlin, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) in the slot to make it 2-0 a minute and 20 seconds later, and freshman forward Matt Serino (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms) made it 3-0 with a backhander at 15:15 of the opening period.

Lindner fired home a pass from senior defenseman Paul Carr (Springfield, MA/Springfield Cathedral HS) at 5:22 of the second period, and junior forward Jon Finn (Warwick, RI/Boston Harborwolves) made it 5-0 1:26 later with his first goal of the season. Vrolyk scored his second goal of the game on the power play with a slap shot from the circle at 16:17. Sophomore forward Mark Trahan (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) scored his first collegiate goal, tipping in a power play shot from sophomore defenseman Eric Quinlan (Saugus, MA/Avon Old Farms/Merrimack) at 19:52.

Vrolyk finished with two goals, Finn and Lindner each had a goal and an assist, and Carr and junior defenseman Mike McNulty (Hingham, MA/Winchendon Academy) each had a pair of assists.

“We moved the puck very well,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “It’s always nice to finish a game without allowing any goals. We have four conference games, three of them against playoff teams and three of them on the road, and we have to continue to play well in order to earn the top seed in the playoffs.”

UMass Dartmouth out shot Franklin Pierce, 35-11. Raven goaltender Steve Moore made 28 saves.

UMass Dartmouth improved to 18-1-1 and 10-0-0 in conference play with the victory, while Franklin Pierce fell to 5-11-2 and 1-8-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Wentworth in an ECAC Northeast game Tuesday evening, while FPC will play at Stonehill next Saturday evening.
