MICHIGAN TECH ROLLS TO 7-4 WIN OVER WAYNE STATE

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- Michigan Tech used a dominating final two periods
on the way to a 7-4 non-conference win in men's ice hockey Saturday
night at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Nick Toneys and Colin
Murphy 1:41 apart midway through opening period. Wayne State,
however, scored three times in the final 3:55, including a
ahorthanded tally with :03 left in the stanza, to stage a 3-2 lead
after 20 minutes.

Tech wasted little time in evening the game, as :15 into the second,
senior Chris Durno put home his first of the year. The Huskies then
took the lead at 4:14 as junior Jon Pittis' banged one in, but just
:13 later, the Warriors evened the contest as Derek MacKay scored
from the slot. The Huskies took the lead for good at 18:30 as Murphy
gained his second goal of the game on a goal-mouth scramble.

The Huskies struck early in period three to take a 6-4 advantage.
Freshman Brandon Schwartz did the damage with Bryan Perez and Brett
Engelhardt drawing assists. The final goal of the game came on the
power play at 14:03 as Engelhardt came off the half wall to the slot
and wristed one into the back of the net.

Cam Ellsworth made 26 saves to pick up the win, while David Guerrera
and Marc Carlson combined for 27 saves in the Wayne State net.

NOTES: Freshman Chris Conner had three assists and four total points
on the weekend . . . A total of 14 players had points for Tech in the
game. . . The victory was MTU's first at home this season . . .
Defensemen accounted for six points in the game for MTU, including
one goal and five assists . . . Tech's seven-goal outsburt matched
its season high. MTU also had seven goals in a 7-1 win at St.
Lawrence on Oct. 18. The Huskies have not scored seven or more goals
in two games in a single season since 1995-96 . . . The Huskies had a
24-10 shots on goal advantage in the final two periods, including an
11-3 edge in the third stanza.
