PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The eighth-ranked Providence College Friars defeated
the top-ranked Boston College Eagles, 5-3, in HOCKEY EAST action on Friday,
February 9 at PC's Schneider Arena. The win over the Eagles, who are tied
for the top spot in the country with Michigan State, gave the Friars their
first victory over a top-ranked team since the squad defeated Boston
University, 5-4, in the Hockey East Semifinals on March 15, 1996 at the
Fleet Center.
The Friars' Doug Wright tallied the game's first goal at the 8:50
mark of the first period. Wright broke in all alone on Eagles' goaltender
Scott Clemmensen and wristed a shot through the netminder's five-hole
giving the Friars a 1-0 lead. At the 17:00 minute mark, BC tied the game,
1-1, on Chuck Kobasew's 17th goal of the season. Bobby Allen fired a shot
from the point that deflected off Friar goaltender Nolan Schaefer. Kobasew
collected the rebound and wristed the puck it into the empty net.
The Friars regained the lead just 55 seconds into the second
period. PC's Shawn Wieman ripped a slap shot from the left-point that
sailed over Clemmensen left shoulder for the Friars' second goal of the
night. The Friars extended their lead to 3-1 at the 9:02 mark of the
second period on a goal by Devin Rask. Rask carried the puck over the blue
line and flipped a back-handed pass to Peter Fregoe near the right face-off
circle. Fregoe controlled the pass and fired a slap shot past Clemmensen.
The Eagles refused to go away in the third period and cut PC's
lead to one goal, 3-2, with a power-play tally at the 3:47 mark. Ben Eaves
backhanded a low shot through Schaefer's legs on the power-play for his
eighth goal of the season. PC regained its two-goal cushion (4-2) when
Cody Loughlean scored on a breakaway at 9:45 of the third. Two minutes
later, Ales Dolinar collected a rebound and lifted a high shot over
Schaefer at the 11:01 mark. BC pressured the Friars over the final nine
minutes of the game, but PC's defense kept the Eagles off the
scoreboard. Fregoe added an empty net goal to seal the win for PC with 16
seconds remaining in the game.
Schaefer made 28 stops in the game and earned his 10th win of the
season. Clemmensen recorded 13 saves for the Eagles.
With the win, the Friars improved to 16-7-4 overall and 10-5-2 in
HOCKEY EAST, while Boston College fell to 21-7-1 and 13-4-1 in league play.
Providence College will return to action on Saturday, February 10
