I have to agree with the many people who label the Harvard win over
Minnesota in the NCAA championwhip in '89 as the best college hockey game.
It is certainly the best game of hockey I've ever seen at any level, and I
was fortunate enough to have been there, a few rows back in the section
behind Stauber's goal when Ed Krayer silenced thousands of stunned Gopher
fans in overtime and sent two elated sections of fans into a frenzy.
Amazing as that moment was, I vote for this game because of the way the
entire game was played. Two teams loaded with talent, including two Hobey
Baker winners and several olympians, went at each other in a beautiful
display of high-speed, high-quality hockey. The game holds up to repeated
watching on video (no, I don't have the with me...), and was a showcase of
the game played as it should be, IMHO. That the Cinderella-story Ivy
League team was able to knock off the Gophers in St Paul only added to the
drama of thate magical game. For one night (unless you were a gopher fan),
everything went right. This is also the game that thoroughly hooked me on
college hockey.
My runners-up would be the NMU-BU final and last year's 3OT semifinal.

        Drop the puck!
