I thought the production was very well done. I also believe that it was
a little too much towards the "look how well they've done growing up in
an all-white sport". In Grier's case, it certainly wasn't easy. As was
reported, his brother dropped hockey because of the racial tension, which
didn't make things any easier. However, I still respect the guy for going
out there amongst the racial slurs and just playing hockey and shutting
everybody up with his game.
As far as Anson Carter goes, it didn't look to me like there was a lot of
racial tension that he had to grow up with in the sport. When you're
from Canada, you grow up with hockey no matter what the color of your
skin is. The only tension probably came at Michigan St. I don't Anson
personally, but I think by that time in his life, he'd know how deal
with whatever racial situations he encountered.
Anyway, I thought it was a very well done production. Let's hope ESPN can
keep up this type of quality reporting.
