What a game. Both teams had numerous chances at the doorstep of the
other, but the bounces were favoring the goalies of both teams. Vermont
must have missed an open net 3 times, and the Bulldogs had a couple
misses from close range as well. The Dogs broke through in the first,
and got a shot by UVM goalie Tim Thomas at the 8:11 mark. The picture on
the front of the sports section in the paper shows one guy all over the
goal scorer Tamminen, the goalie and another defender in front of the
net, and another 2 defenders bearing down, but somehow Joe got it in.
The Dogs held on to the lead, and it looked like they were headed for
their first ever 1-0 win. Unfortunately, in the closing seconds there
was a huge scramble in front of the net, Lendzyk went down, the puck was
still flopping around, and UMD center Ken Dzikowski, who was without a
glove or a stick, used his elbow to nudge the goal off of the posts. The
whistle blew at 19:59.4. The officials used their collective mind
(Sorry, Buzzy was reffing) to make the call, which was correct, but you
wouldn't think so, the way the crowd acted. The puck was placed at
center ice, Eric Perrin shut out the standing, roaring crowd from his
mind and raced toward Lendzyk. He didn't seem to put on much of a move,
but just blew it by Lendzyk. Martin St. Louis got the winner at 3:30 of
the overtime and the Dogs dropped their overtime record to 1-2-2 on the
year.
