I think you might be confusing the time that he accepted the Athletic
Director position at BU with the Bruins offers. As far as I know, he was
twice offered the coaching position with the Bruins, most recently when Pat
Burns as hired, and both times turned it down. Both times, he seemed to
seriously consider it, though the this most recent time he seemed less
interested then the earlier offer. Maybe the first offer contained some
more wavering than I recall, but I'm pretty sure that he never fully
accepted the Bruins offers either time.
The AD position, however, he accepted for short period of time, maybe a
month at most, and then decided that he prefered to just be the coach and
stepped down from the AD position.
