BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Steve Kashian scored a power-play goal at 6:08 of the
third period, breaking a 2-2 deadlock and lifting Bowdoin to a 3-2 win over
Colby in ECAC East hockey action Wednesday night at Dayton Arena. The win
improved Bowdoin to 9-5 overall (8-4 in league play) and dropped Colby to 7-7
overall (5-7 in the league). The loss also continued Colby's streak of
futility in Brunswick. The White Mules have not won in Dayton Arena since
March 1, 1968, and fell to 0-25-3 in that span.
Bowdoin's special teams were the difference as the Polar Bears converted
two of three power-play chances while shutting the White Mules out on the man
advantage situations. Joe Gaffney opened the scoring with a brilliant rush
at 17:32 of the first period, but Bill Driscoll's slapshot tied it just 50
seconds later. Bowdoin nudged ahead 2-1 in the second frame as Marcello
Gentile added a tally, but Colby evened it again just 20 seconds into the
third period, with Brian Pompeo getting credit for a goal that bounced off
his skate. That set the stage for Kashian's game-winner. Bowdoin goaltender
Darren Hersh was brilliant in the final five minutes, making seven saves,
including a stop of a solo breakaway by Colby's Derek Bettencourt. Hersh
finished the game with 25 saves.
