THE DETROIT NEWS did an interesting piece on the salaries
and outside earnings of University of Michigan athletic department
personnel this weekend. The hockey coaching staff is the third
highest paid group as far as UM salary...but are damn near the
bottom in outside income [of any form]. Here are some figures:
SPORT COACHES SALARIES OTHER INCOME

Men's Basketball 4 $237,000 $353,000

Women's Basketball 4 $129,000 $ 36,250
Wrestling 3 $ 94,400 $ 32,250
Baseball 3 $ 94,400 $ 6,597
Volleyball 3 $ 90,000 $ 38,950

Men's Swimming 2 $ 79,000 $ 44,000
Softball 3 $ 77,500 $ 9,850
Women's Swimming 2 $ 68,260 $ 37,300
Soccer 2 $ 62,000 $ 3,000
Women's Gymnastics 2 $ 58,000 $ 10,900
Men's Tennis 2 $ 57,000 $ 47,000
Field Hockey 2 $ 54,500 $ 11,700

Women's Golf 1 $ 25,000 $ 3,000
Women's Track 1 $ 12,000 $ 4,000
For example, Football Head Coach Gary Moeller makes a salary
of $130,00, gets $110,00 from TV/radio, $30,000 from clinics, $80,000
from Nike [$35,000 of which he donates to an educational fund for
the children of assistant coaches], $25,000 from Nutmeg Mills and
$11,000 from camps. According to the paper, that totals $421,000!?
[I think they double-counted $35K from Nike.]
Steve Fisher, Men's Basketball Head Coach, receives $115,000
in University salary, $200,000 from Nike, $69,000 from camps,
$60,000 from TV/radio, $3500 from Rawlings and $3000 from
speeches for a total of $450,500!
The hockey coaches break down as follows:
Red Berenson......$80,000
Mel Pearson.......$40,000 + $6000 from camps
Billy Powers......$12,000
Interesting stuff. Maybe we pick up the NCFBA [National Collegiate
Football & Basketball Association] moniker that someone suggested
a couple of years ago, as well as NC$$. :-)
