Clarkson defeated Colgate, tonight (Sat), 5-2 to sweep the best of 3
ECAC quarterfinal series.

Clarkson got on the board early in the first when Craig Conroy scored
his 25th of the year. Later in the first, Patrice Robitaille scored his
first of the night giving Clarkson a 2-0 lead. Colgate got on the board
later in the first on a controversial goal. A colgate player flipped the
puck high in the air from well behind the red line. It went over
everyone's heads and rolled to the back wall but for some reason,
the officials waved off icing. Before you knew it, Scott Steeves of
Colgate put one past Clarkson goalie Jason Currie, cutting the lead
to 2-1.

Early in the second period, Robitaille scored his second power play
goal of the night and he took a pass from Conroy and put it past
Colgate goalie Jason Gates. Colgate's Brent Wilde made it 3-2 about 8
min. into the second when he put a rebound of a Mike Harder shot past
Currie.

Early in the third, Steve Palmer broke down the right wing and was played
well by the defenseman but he was able to wrist a weak backhand through
Gates' legs for his 17th of the year. Robitaille got the hat trick on
another power play goal as he found the puck in the slot and blasted
it past Gates for the final margin of victory. Brian Mueller got an
assist on the play to notch his 100th career point as a Clarksonian.

Clarkson advances to the ECAC semifinals next Friday night. They will
play either RPI, Brown or Vermont. If RPI wins their series, Clarkson
will play the Engineers. If Union beats RPI, then Clarkson plays the
Brown-Vermont winner.

Both Currie and Gates played fairly well in nets. Currie did not have
to face a lot of tough shots. Gates played really well in the third to
prevent a blowout, making a few nice saves.
