The Brown University Bears (BUBs) started out the scoring with a
power play goal three minutes into the game. The shot was their first
for the game. Mike Ross shot from the point and it was deflected by
Sascha Pogor over goaltender Shaun Gravistin's shoulder. Nice play. A
little over six minutes later, the Seawolves came back. Mark Stitt was
behind the left post and passed the puck to Troy Norcross who was behind
the right post. Brown netminder Brett Haywood went down trying to stuff
the wraparound but Norcross skated right through the crease and shot it
into the open net. Poor defense of the part of Brown, IMHO. UAA
finished off the scoring in the first period with a power play goal of
their own by Dean Larson when he stuffed the puck past Haywood.
The second period started out quietly enough. Trent Pankewicz
slid a slow moving puck from high between the circles between Brown
netminder Haywood's pads. Although Haywood _did_ have five skaters
screening him, he still should have got this one. I mean, I could have
walked faster than it was going. Anyways, things started to get ugly
after that ugly goal. 32 minutes worth of penalties were called at
16:11 of the period. I don't know what started it, but all the skaters
that were on the ice were involved and all but one was put into the
penalty box. Brown had four minors for delay of game and one double
minor for roughing while UAA had three minors for delay of game and one
minor for roughing. 15 minutes later, on the faceoff, Scott Hanley of
Brown decided to lose his cool and shoved Jim Tobin of UAA to the ice.
A penalty for delay of game was called, but on the way to the box he got
a good hook in on Dean Larson. Result- 10 minute misconduct and a game
misconduct. Six men were in the box (and one in the locker room for
Brown and four men in the box for UAA. A 5-4 game of hockey, with
goalies, could be played with that number of people! Needless to say,
the Brown bench was rather spacious. On the ensuing 5-3,
Alaska-Anchorage got three post shots but no goals. The next goal was
to come with 6:59 left in the period when UAA broke in with a 3-1 and
scored on a nice shot by Steve Bogeyevac.
Brown started out the third period well with their second power
play goal of the night. Sascha Pogor shot into the empty net when
Seawolf goaltender Shaun Gravistin slid... and kept on sliding, right
out of the crease, to block a feinted shot. UAA finished off the
scoring for the game with a goal from Derek Donald.

Notes for the series
--------------------

The thing that impressed me the most about the Bears was their
penalty killing. UAA went 2-12 for the weekend which included a couple
of two-minute 5-3 opportunities. To do that against the power play unit
for UAA is a big accomplishment. The Seawolves won the series by
hustling and keeping control of the puck for most of the series.
