Too bad I didn't read this carefully *before* I posted it.  Before
someone (else) suggests Walsh and Woog were punished, please allow me
to reword what I was trying to say ...
 
    Hockey players don't learn to play by the rules, they learn to play
    the game as it is called.  Every team interferes with the
    forecheck. Every team backchecks (backchecking is "part of the
    game", but every good team does it).  Hitting from behind and
    crosschecks have been a part of every Maine game at the Alfond this
    year, as they have every year.  Since they're deemed "not
    significant" enough for a penalty, nothing is called until they get
    "flagrant".  The calling of assists is just another case of the
    tradition of hockey overshadowing the rules, IMHO.
