Well, on the interview following NMU's 6-3 semifinal WCHA playoff
victory over Wisconsin, Rick Comley came across as just the opposite
of what I had expected. He was not happy with the play of his team
and was pretty short on the interview. He was particularly displeased,
he said, that the Wildcats gave up a lot of 3 on 2 breakouts. When
the interviewer got in a comment about Joe Frederick's being on fire
and loving to play in the Twin Cities--and against the Badgers, turns
out he's from Madison (don't know if Wisconsin gave Joe a look before
he was recruited by NMU), Rick's comment was "a poor effort but three
goals. Sometimes they're just going to go in." Ouch! Well, I guess
there's no question about letting the Wildcats get too relaxed for
the championship game tomorrow night as far as Rick's concerned.

Comley WAS very complimentary of Corwin Saurdiff's effort in goal,
but in keeping with the tenor of his general remarks, noted "that's
what you need when you're going like that" (i.e. not playing well as
a team). Rick did say the players were ready and played hard but
just didn't get it together.

Well, I guess we Wildcat fans will have to hope the 'Cats are more
pleasing to the coach tomorrow! Gee--I'm no coach, but sure wasn't
expecting Rick to have such a negative view following such a game.
Maybe this is all psychology on Comley's part.

P.S. Corwin Saurdiff now holds the NMU freshman record for wins by
a goalie; this was his 21st. Also, for those of you outside
the area, you may be interested to know that Wisconsin goalie
Derksen, who has missed the last several games due to injury,
was named the WCHA MVP this week. Dallas Drake of NMU was
honored as Defensive Player of the Year in the WCHA, which is
particularly noteworthy because I believe he is also the leading
      scorer.
