A possible candidate you can take a look at on Thursday night and all of
next year would be Michigan's Jed Ortmeyer. The coaches pre-empted the
traditional team vote for a senior captain to give Ortmeyer the job as a
junior, even though he missed the last 17 games of his sophomore
season. Berenson felt the large incoming freshman contingent needed the
best leadership available during early development. He predicted
Ortmeyer could become the best captain in Michigan history.

The fans have agreed. An Omaha native whose brother played at Miami,
Ortmeyer fits the classic mold of the gritty player who's not highly
skilled but competes by determination. He's not a scoring leader.
Opponents who don't keep their heads up when his 175 pounds are on the
ice probably won't be either. Of the two glassy eyed St. Cloud players
who apparently stayed on the bench between periods last Friday, one was
a beneficiary of Ortmeyer's self-introduction.
