PROVIDENCE'S HIXSON AND LIBBY EARN
VERIZON ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT 1 HONORS
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on March 22 that Providence College
senior cross country/track star Rachel Hixson (Media, Pa.) and senior men's
hockey player Matt Libby (Saco, Maine) earned 2000-01 Verizon Academic
All-District 1 Fall/Winter At-Large honors. Hixson and Libby received
Second Team accolades.
Hixson, a humanities major with a 3.56 cumulative grade point average, was
one of PC's top cross country runners this season. A 1998 All-American in
cross country, Hixson placed 28th at the 2000 NCAA Cross Country
Championship and helped the team earn a ninth-place finish. She also
placed ninth at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship and fourth at the
BIG EAST Cross Country Championship. Last year, Hixson earned First Team
Academic All-District 1 Fall/Winter honors and First Team Academic
All-District 1 Spring accolades. Hixson is a three-time BIG EAST Academic
All-Star. In 1998, she represented the U.S. at the 1998 World Junior Cross
Country Championship.
Libby, a management major with a 3.69 cumulative grade point average,
helped the Providence hockey team earn its first bid to the NCAA Tournament
since 1996. Libby finished third on the team in scoring this season with
30 points (10 goals, 20 assists) in 39 games. The senior defenseman is a
three-time HOCKEY EAST Academic All-Star. This season, Libby was named
Second Team All-HOCKEY EAST after leading the Friars to their top finish
ever in league play as the team finished tied for second with a 13-8-3
mark. The Friars advanced to the HOCKEY EAST Championship game where the
team was defeated by Boston College. The Friars were defeated in the first
round of the NCAA Tournament by Wisconsin, 4-1, in Grand Rapids, Mich.
Libby was instrumental in helping the Friars post a 22-13-5 mark and earn
the most wins by the team since 1991.
