Even though, as people have stated before, comparing NCAA basketball to NCAA
hockey is like apples and oranges, their are some similarities.

The biggest is the big conferences don't want to schedule weak teams for one
reason or another. In hockey the RPI implications are big, especially when
it hurts you even though you win big. Basketball has it two fold. First
teams don't want the RPI loss, plus they're scared of losing to a Mid-major
conference power. Case in point, after Creighton beat Oklahoma St. in Omaha
this year, Eddie Sutton said he'd never schedule Creighton again in Omaha.
(course some of that has to do with Creighton being his first job as a head
coach, but you get my drift)

It's a chicken-egg scenario for both sports, mid-major teams
(Missouri-Valley/Ivy/Mid-American/MAAC in basketball, MAAC in hockey) need
to schedule tougher opponents to boost their RPI to make them better, but
major teams won't schedule them until they're better and won't hurt their RPI.
