This weekend
The Wisconsin hockey team opens its 33rd season of action this weekend in a
series versus Colorado College. The games are set for 8:35 and 8:05 p.m.
starts at the Air Force Academy this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13-14. It is
the third year in a row that the Badgers have opened their season on the
road. Wisconsin is 3-0 in those games.

Silver anniversary
Badger head coach Jeff Sauer enters his 25th year of collegiate head
coaching in 1995-96. He begins his 14th year as the head coach at
Wisconsin. His overall mark stands at 513-415-38 (.551). At Wisconsin he
boasts a record of 347-189-27 (.640).

Sauer's 513 wins rank fifth (among Division I coaches) on the all-time
career wins chart and seventh among all coaches. He is one of only two
active D-I coaches with that many victories. Only Ron Mason (724) of

(Mahwah, N.J.). Assistant captains are senior wing Mike Strobel (St. Paul,

Sauer vs. Colorado College
Head coach Jeff Sauer is 44-11-1 against CC teams lifetime . away from the
Dane County Coliseum, he has a 19-6-0 mark . of his 513 wins, 166 came
while coaching at Colorado College from 1971-82 . Sauer played wing for the
CC Tigers from 1961-65, lettering three years.

That's a lot of games
Coach Sauer is nearing his 1,000th game as a head coach this year. Entering
this season, Sauer has coached in 966 games.

Badger Max
Senior captain Max Williams hopes to pick up where he left off at the
conclusion of the 1994-95 season. Williams finished the year scoring in 16
of his final 18 games, including 13 of the last 14. He was the WCHA's
fourth-leading scorer (26-26-52) and led the UW in scoring all of last
year. His 26 goals were the most scored at Wisconsin since the 1992-93
season when Dan Plante and Jason Zent both tied for the team lead with 26.

Mickey Elick -- Mr. Reliable
Senior defenseman Mickey Elick enters the weekend at Colorado College with
a 119-game consecutive-games played streak (including exhibition games).
Elick hasn't missed a game since his freshman year when he didn't travel to
Minn.-Duluth for the series (Nov. 27-28, 1992).

Be like Mike
Senior winger Mike Strobel is the team's career leader in power-play goals
(11) and tied for the career lead in short-handed goals (3). He led his
teammates in power-play goals (10) and game-winning tallies (6) last
season.

Road tested
Wisconsin plays four of its first five series and 10 of its first 12 games
on the road to start the '95-96 campaign. The Badgers host Denver on Oct.
20-21, but then do not return home to the Dane County Coliseum until Dec.
1-2 when Michigan Tech comes to town.

There are five new faces on the UW roster this year. On defense -- Luke
Gruden, Mike LaPlante and Tim Rothering; at forward -- Yuri Gusak; in goal

ranked in the WCHA's top 10 in scoring at the end of the '94-95 season ...
Colin Schmidt (26-31-57; 2nd-T WCHA scoring), Peter Geronazzo (29-28-57;
2nd- T), Jay McNeill (33-18-51; 5th) and Chad Remackel (17-31-48; 9th-T)
lead the league's most experienced group of returning forwards ... in goal,
junior Ryan Bach returns from an 18-5-1 season where he recorded a 3.27
goals-against average and an .895 save percentage ... CC led the WCHA in
all offensive categories last season -- goals (213), assists (330), points
(543), power-play (67), shorthanded (15) and game-winning goals (30).
